The Present Situation
Assam is in grip of another flood & is creating havoc throughout the state. Almost 57 lakh people are affected due to the calamity. NDMA along with state agencies are responsible to take the situation under control but are we as citizens failing in our duty?
Natural factors responsible for the calamity
Assam has been prone to floods through ages, the major reason being incessant rainfall & the flow of Brahmaputra in the region. The Brahmaputra has one of the highest sediment yields in the world contributed by melting glaciers that add to the load leading to erosion & large scale floods.
We have contributed to the calamity
The earthquake-prone region is witnessing huge population growth & settlement resulting in deforestation. This has led to the formation of temporary sandbars & islands where people settle down but face the temporary habitations face destruction during floods.
A pan India calamity
Not just Assam but Bihar, Maharashtra & various states are facing the issue of flooding. Almost 57 lakh people have been affected in Assam. Poor drainage system enhances the extent of the calamity. It’s high time that we go for water harvesting & other water management solutions.

A number of dams & embankments have been constructed to control the flow of water but have led to the destruction of ecology & displacement of people. Integrated basin management would be an ideal solution made effective through interstate & governmental cooperation.
